MPs urge the chancellor to add missed one million to furlough scheme
MPs have asked that Rishi Sunak to extend the government's furlough scheme to include a further 1 million workers who have missed out on the government's income support measures.
MPs from the Treasury Committee have said that people who started employment after the March cut-off date or who set up a company in the last 12 months should not be excluded from the furlough scheme
They have also recommended that people sho are Self-employed and who earn more than the government's threshold should also be included in the scheme. This includes for example who work in the media industries such as television and theatre as well as company directors who pay themselves in company dividends.
Mel Stride, chair of the Treasury Select Committee said that the chancellor has acted quickly in an attempt to curtail the expected increase in unemployment following the lockdown in March. He said, “If it is to be fair and completely fulfil its promise of doing whatever it takes, the government should urgently enact our recommendations to help those who have fallen through the gaps,”
